Africa’s largest pay-TV operator, MultiChoice, has recommended that shareholders accept a $2.9 billion buyout offer from a French media company called Canal+.
If completed, the Bolloré family’s Vivendi, which owns Canal+, will control DSTV, Showmax, GoTV, and several sports broadcast licenses in Africa, a deal that could significantly transform paid TV on the continent.
Why do Vivendi and Canal+ want to buy MultiChoice? Who are they, and how will this affect viewers?
Let’s unpack what clues we can find.
Vivendi, a mass media and communications company with headquarters in France, owns CANAL+, the company bidding for MultiChoice.
The company is owned by a family called the Bolloré family, a wealthy multi-billionaire company from France that made their money from port, logistics, and shipping.
They also owned a media company called Canal TV.
Canal is a big media company with about €9.6 billion in revenue, which makes it about 3.2 times larger than MultiChoice.
Vivendi might sound new to many people, but they have been very active in Africa.
When it comes to TV in Africa, you have two big blocks: the English-speaking block and the French-speaking block.
In the French-speaking block, Vivendi, through CANAL+, has strong representation, with 7.6 million subscribers on the continent.
This is impressive, but still much smaller than MultiChoice, with 22 million subscribers.
With the deal, CANAL+ would effectively control paid TV in Africa.
However, even if the deal fails, Vivendi/CANAL+ already holds a significant influence on paid TV in Africa, as they currently hold over 42% of the shares in MultiChoice.
Vivendi has been steadily increasing its shareholding in MultiChoice as a high school boy pursues his crush.
Every year, it has maintained that MultiChoice is “just a friend,” but now it has come out and proposed to buy MultiChoice outright.
Why do they want MultiChoice?
When we look at Vivendi’s latest annual report, we get a bit of the rationale.
The company has three strategic pillars: transformation, internalisation, and integration.
The one to focus on is internationalisation.
Vivendi makes most of its revenue from France, which, like most of Europe, is not a high-growth area, so it’s no wonder there is a push for “internationalisation,” especially through mergers and acquisitions into new markets.
What better place to expand than into Africa?
Despite Africa’s challenges, the growth potential is there for those who are patient.
So, buying a company that would allow you to control paid TV on the continent, which will have the largest labour force in the world by 2050, seems like a good idea.
Additionally, MultiChoices’ stock price has been falling for a while, so it is relatively cheaper than before, especially if you factor in the depreciation of the rand.
Furthermore, international players have put more pressure on MultiChoice, making it appear weak.
Vivendi may also want to strike before other players get interested.
MultiChoice has partnered with Comcast’s NBC Universal and Sky on the new Showmax.
On a revenue basis, Sky is nearly 2x the size of Vivedi, while Comcast is over 10x larger.
These factors combined suggest that now could be a good time to strike for Vivendi.
Will the deal go through? Due to a variety of issues, it is difficult to determine whether the deal will proceed. For example, there is a law in South Africa governing what percentage of foreign investors can own a broadcaster in that country.
The second and potentially larger hurdle is South Africa’s Electronic Communications Act, which prohibits foreign entities from holding more than 20 percent of the voting rights of a local broadcasting rights holder.
In the circular, the companies said they were “assessing and finalising suitable structuring options and potential transactions” to ensure compliance with that rule while ensuring MultiChoice could still retain a minimum level of black shareholding under South Africa’s empowerment rules. Canal+ said it was “fully committed” to ensuring MultiChoice retained its black ownership credentials.
One tricky topic Vivendi may need to navigate is how some French organisations are sometimes perceived as imperialist in Africa.
They may need to tone down such statements.
“Vivendi is one of the few groups that can spread the influence of European culture worldwide.”
It is still early days, so I expect a lot to happen. For consumers, at least in the short term, there will be minimal impact, but for the management team of MultiChoice, I can imagine this could be difficult to navigate.

Fact Or Fiction: Did The Igbo Really Originate From The East
The common mentality amongst Nigerians is to always associate the Igbo with the stereotype “east” even thou the eastern Nigeria from an objective geographical perspective is Taraba and Adamawa State.
South East geographically includes Cross River and Akwa Ibom states.
However the general perception is that Igbos come from East of the Niger and once you cross the Niger bridge at Asaba you are in Igbo land.
But is this really true??
Of course not..
Igbos certainly did not spring from the soil and certainly did not come from the East.
Archeology and anthropology demonstrates that the dispersal of the proto kwa peoples from the fertile Volta-Niger basin following the desertification of the Sahara >6000 years ago, brought the ancestors of the Yoruba and Igbo into this part of the country, yes the Igbo more accurately migrated from a Northwesterly direction.
This is attested by the fact that Yoruba oral legends often speak of the Igbo as their neighbours in the distant past.
As the Igbo took on their new environment, a branch of the Igbo split in two with one half settling on the Western half of the Niger River and the other half crossing the River.
This means that there is a branch of the Igbo which never crossed the Niger…
They are the Ikas.. they are aboriginal to the lands they currently occupy.
This group formed the foundational framework for what would become the Enuani, Ukwuani and Oru clans of the Igbo today.
Thus as Igbos were settling down in the Eastern part of the Niger, they were settling down at the same time on the western end.
Clues even indicate that the Igbo settlement on the Western side was far more extensive than it is currently but for Benin expansion using Portuguese firearms.
The Ikas have no tradition of coming from anywhere but trace their origin to a primordial figure called Ogele.
The other group which crossed the Niger went on to form the precursor of what is today Northern Enugu (Nsukka) and northern Ebonyi groups which probably explains the myriad of linguistic and cultural similarities between the three groups despite the distance of separation.
Thus much of the igbo subgroup on the western side of the Niger is aboriginal. People need to remove that mentality that they came from the East. The West Igbo towns with histories of migration from Nri, Awka, Isu, Owerri etc are recent settlements known as secondary migrations. This aboriginal population are the reasons why the numerous tales of migrations of warlords from Benin did not constitute a language or cultural shift amongst the people who were more numerically than the new settlers.
Likewise it is foolish to treat migrations from the western part of the Niger as returnees… e.g the Akarai (Ogbaru), Onicha, etc.
Where were they returning to? They were fleeing their original homes because of wars.
Mentalities such as these is why one day Edo and Urhobo would wake up and tell Igbos in Delta State to return to “their homeland” in the East.

True Life Story: How I was dehumanized for 20 years on death row – 53 years old businessman.
True Life Story
In 1995, Mumuni Adisa left his family in Lagos Island for a party in Ibadan, Oyo State in the company of two of his friends. It was a weekend, so he planned to return before Monday to attend to his thriving business.
By a twist of fate, Adisa never attended the party for which he travelled, instead, he ended up at a Police station where he was accused of armed robbery with his friends.
Although he insists the charges were strange to him as he had never been involved in a crime, he was convicted and sentenced to death. In this edition, Adisa who was recently granted amnesty shares with Encounter, his 20 years of terrible ordeal waiting endlessly for the hangman’s rope and how he is struggling to rebuild his life.
How it started.
My name is Mumuni Adisa. I am 53 years old and a businessman. In 1995, two of my friends, Wahab Alao and Fatai Busari invited me to join them to attend a party in Ibadan, Oyo State. When we got to an area called Ile-Epo, we went into a pharmaceutical shop to buy drugs for Alao who had pile. As we made our way out of the shop, some people started shouting that we were thieves. Before we knew what was happening, a team of policemen rounded us up and dragged us into their van.
The scene was a big surprise for me because I am not a thief and have never been involved in any criminal activity. We were taken to the police station and on the second day, my family came to visit me. My family was shocked when the police said I was part of an armed robbery gang because they know I have never been involved in a crime. The police later said my friends and I were part of the gang that killed a former Commissioner of Police a year earlier in Ibadan. I initially refused to sign the statement they prepared for me indicting me of armed robbery but after many threats to kill me and my friends, I signed the statement.
Arraignment.
A few weeks after our arrest, we were arraigned before an Ibadan High Court for armed robbery. We were remanded at Agodi prison. My family got a lawyer to apply for bail for me on three occasions and on each occasion, the court turned it down because the allegations against me by the prosecutor could attract capital punishment.. Shockingly, the robbery incident that the police alleged that I took part in happened in 1994 while I was arrested in 1995.
Before my arrest, I had not travelled to Ibadan the previous year so I was surprised when the police alleged that I was among the gang that killed one CP Kolawole. Again, no weapon was found on me when I was arrested so I don’t know where the police got the gun they said they found on me. It was after we got to the police station that someone told us that a robbery had happened at the spot where we were arrested a few months back and that the police were on the lookout for the perpetrators of the crime.
Trial
During the trial, the police relied heavily on the confessional statement that I was forced to sign. Despite the effort made by my lawyer, the trial judge upheld the charges and convicted me of armed robbery in 2002. I appealed against my conviction but the Court of Appeal also upheld the decision of the lower court. The Supreme Court also did the same thing.
How my father-in-law died helping me
During my incarceration, my father-in-law was always coming to visit me in prison. On every visit, he would always bring food and money for my welfare. He maintained that routine until the day he was murdered by some criminals just after the 3rd Mainland Bridge, in Lagos. He left home very early and boarded a bus to Ibadan at the CMS bus stop not knowing that criminals were inside the bus. They thought the food he was bringing for me which he wrapped with nylon was a bundle of money so they forcefully took it from him and strangled him before throwing him out of the moving bus.
Sympathizers gathered around his lifeless body and even one of his daughters who was passing by also saw the crowd but did not know that it was her father that was lying dead. It was much later when they started looking for him that it was discovered that he was the person that was killed in the morning. I was very sad over the incident and was not myself for weeks. He believed in my innocence and was always bringing me food and giving me words of encouragement.
Death row ordeal
The death row was hell and I will never wish my worst enemy a day inside the death row cell. I ate, drank, defecate and did everything within the cell. The heat inside the cell cannot be compared with anything. We were treated like dead people by the prison warders. The scariest part of my experience was whenever prison officials came to pick any of us for execution. When I newly got into the cell, the execution of condemned inmates was a regular occurrence. We usually don’t know who will be executed next amongst us so whenever we heard the prison officials marching towards our cell, we began to panic.
Some would begin to stool while others would begin to say their last prayer. Execution was a frequent thing, so I was living one day at a time believing that I might be the next person. We may just finish a meal in the morning and the next thing you will see prison warders coming to take any of us for hanging. One thing that gave me little hope was when I remembered my vow before my wife on the day my judgment was pronounced that I was innocent. I told her that I would return home one day because I am innocent.
Met real culprits in prison
I met one of the persons who killed the Police officer whom we were convicted of inside the prison. During one of our open-out sessions, we were just talking with one another before taking a bath when one inmate who was convicted of armed robbery called me out and confessed that he was a member of the gang that killed the Police Commissioner during a robbery in 1994.
The Police Commissioner was the same officer police charged my friends and me for killing. I was shocked by his revelation but there was nothing I could do. After the confession, the inmate started distancing himself from me and I sensed that he thought I would report his disclosure to the authorities.
When I told my other co-convicts, they were also shocked but there was nothing we could do because by then, the Supreme Court had confirmed our conviction. I learned the inmate and his gang were convicted for another murder. Surprisingly, they were granted amnesty after also serving years on death row.
Bad influence in prison
Prison is full of bad influences and it takes the grace of God for someone to spend years there without being influenced. Inside the prison, you will meet real heartless killers, kidnappers, fraudsters, cultists, and petty thieves. So when you get in there, you mix with everyone. Sometimes they form gangs inside the prison so if an innocent man who was unjustly incarcerated finds himself in such an environment, it will take the grace of God for him to still be himself. It was a big struggle for me but I remained myself throughout my stay before I was granted amnesty.
Wife’s struggles
I appreciate my wife for remaining faithful to our marriage and taking care of our children while I was in prison. I know it must have been a difficult period for her because she was always sharing with me the struggles she was passing through. She did all manners of jobs to take care of our children after my business crumbled. The money realized from the sale of my property was used to pay lawyers handling my case. So she had practically nothing to take care of the children. She is a good woman and I am grateful for all her support. It is only God that will reward her.
Delayed release
The two of my friends with whom we were convicted were released earlier this year after our death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment. I thought that naturally, they would release me just like my friends but surprisingly, nothing was done about my release. My family had to engage a lawyer who took over my case and wrote the Amnesty Committee. It was after that letter that I was released.
Lessons
7 years awaiting trial and 20 years on death row has taught me big lessons. First, I will never follow anyone on an occasion that I don’t know what it is about. It was because I followed my friends to a party that I wasted 27 years of my life. I run away from the company of young girls because I witnessed cases of innocent people being framed for rape. I also avoid fights and needless arguments. Many people ended up in prison because of needless fights that led to manslaughter or murder and they are regretting their actions in prison. You only know the beginning of a fight but not the ending.
Jobless, appeal for support
Since I was released from prison last month, things have been extremely difficult for me. My first challenge was getting used to my environment again. A lot of things have changed in the last 27 years and I am trying to acclimatize. I have also been depending on my friends and family for feeding and it has not been easy for me.
What I need now is a little support from anybody to start my life afresh. I will appreciate any help or job offer from anyone.

This is why most of us, the oldies, no longer partake in every film. With N200,000, some people will move to shoot a film. Actors now pay to partake in movies just for popularity, instead of them to be paid. And where there are no producers or directors that are professionally trained, they just take a space somewhere and they shoot a film.
The industry is growing, most movies we shoot now can stand the test of time. You can match them with that of the white men. We are moving higher and as an actor, if you allow the train to leave you, you should not blame anyone or say you are being segregated.
What we are shooting now is no longer what we used to shoot before; if you check the locations of the movies that we are shooting now, you will know that we have gone far. Everything seems to be like that of the western world. So, when you act in movies that will not go anywhere, you do not expect to be applauded. These people eager to be on the screen are not trained, paid, they do everything by themselves and they still pay for it.

Oke Ite: What You Need To Know
The rise of “Oke Ite” rituals among the Igbo youths is on alarming side. The quest for quick wealth, lack of employment opportunities, hard times, and moral decadence has led many into suicidal acts such as indulging in oke ite.
“Oke Ite” is a money ritual usually done mostly in Igbo land. This is what is killing most young men in Igbo land today. Some call it “yahoo plus“, “Oruru” or “Awele“.
The least an experienced native doctor can charge anyone to prepare this charm is N1.5 million naira. Some native doctors charge as high as N3 million. Some don’t charge; what they do is to collect percentage of whatever you realize from time to time. Most traders also do this charm.
Oke Ite is money ritual (ogwu ego). The native doctor usually prepares it with bat, other dangerous species of birds, bitter herbs, roots and barks of spiritual trees like the ogilisi. The main ingredients are dog’s spare parts and human spare parts. They work directly with mortuary attendants. They need mostly parts of those who died through road accident and others who died at an unripe age. They also go for the parts of women who had no children. Any native doctor who knows how to prepare this must be an occultic native doctor, which without being one, the vibration will sweep the native doctor off within a short time. The kickback is usually harsh on the native doctors.
A man preparing Oke Ite
In this category of charm is the powerful “Ibobo isi atu“. Ibobo is hung on the wall. Celebrities do it. Contractors, security heads and lawyers who want to be feared do it. They do it to command respect and be feared and get attracted to important people’s admiration. It’s a very dangerous charm. It’s almost more dangerous and costly than Okeite. Anybody who has Ibobo is feared for no reason. People listen where they talk. As a Contractor, your own bidding is first considered. It carries force of attraction. Another charm in this category is “udu ako mmili” (a calabash that never lacks water). It’s more like okeite. It takes the same process to prepare.
Another one is “Oke awele”. Traders, transporters and farmers do this mostly. Another one is what is called “aro agba aka” (year will never go by without making a person wealthy). It’s a new discovery under this category and seems to be the deadliest.
These are some of the things you tap as grace in the lives of some people you think are rich. Funny enough is that no stupendously rich person does any of these. What they afford those doing them are Benz, houses and money to spend on women and spray at events. That’s all. Nobody who does any of these things is ever counted among wealthy men and women in the society.
The side effects are bigger than what they offer. You continue losing family members from time to time. They seize some people’s ability to give birth. Some may give birth, but the baby will die on delivery. Sometimes, the mother follows it. They destroy children. Some don’t live more than five years. But the money will be coming. On dying, the properties collapse as they came. Apart from the lethal effects, you will not have peace of mind while alive. You will not assist anyone with the money. This is why a rich person in a family suspected to be behind another’s death can come out boldly and swear with their life and nothing harms them. And once the pot stops frothing, the time for the person to go has come. That’s when you find some young boys die of road accident or go mad or die in mysterious ways. So, when you are tapping from a person’s grace just because he bought a new vehicle or built a new house, know it that you might be tapping from a strange force. No yahoo boy who has voluminous money nowadays gets it outside this means. Ordinary Yahoo stopped paying some five years ago. It’s good that you know all these so that no one pushes you into regrettable living. So that you don’t envy people you are better than. So that you don’t think you are not working hard. Learn. Research. Ask questions. Don’t jealous. Don’t envy. Don’t be disturbed by the doings of some people who don’t have known sources of income.

Policeman Returns Home After 9 Months Training To Meet Wife Heavily Pregnant For Brother
The fate that befell Japhet Aba, a newly recruited policeman in Nasarawa State, is one that no young man would envy. His heart was torn apart, his ego badly bruised after he left home for training in Bauchi State and returned to discover that his newly married wife had been impregnated by his stepbrother.
Japhet, a youthful indigene of Doma Local Government Area of Nasarawa State and only son of his mother, had reported in Bauchi for post- recruitment training about three months after he got married.
The product of Nasarawa State Polytechnic had joined the police about three months after his marriage with Angela Onuh, a graduate of the College of Agriculture Lafia.
Although the couple was said to have dated for about one year before they got married, they were said to have struck an agreement that they would have no intimacy before their marriage in September last year. Unfortunately, the intimacy they had after marriage could not result in pregnancy before the husband departed for training.
In the build-up to his departure for police training in Bauchi, Japhet decided to secure an apartment in Lafia, Nasarawa State capital, in a compound where his stepbrother, Samuel Aba, already living, believing that the primary school teacher would help to look after his wife in his absence.
Japhet, however, got the shock of his life when he returned from Bauchi after nine months and found his wife heavily pregnant. Upon enquiry, Angela told Japhet that she was lured by Samuel into an affair until she became pregnant for him.
She also said that she avoided aborting the pregnancy because her parents, particularly her mother who had died a few years ago, had warned her that she would die if she engaged in any abortion.
While Japhet who returned home to the shocking discovery in July has since reported at his place of primary assignment, matters became worse for him recently as a bullet was said to have hit his manhood during an exchange of gunfire between the police and some daredevil robbers. He is at the moment undergoing treatment in a hospital in Lafia while Angela was recently delivered of a baby boy.
Samuel, on his part, suffered a worse fate as some herdsmen were said to have attacked and shot him dead while he was on inspection of his farm in Doma village. But while Samuel was said to have seen the new baby before his death, Japhet who has been on admission in the hospital, has not had the opportunity of seeing the newborn baby or his wife since July.
Recalling the events that culminated in the scandalous incident in an exclusive chat with our correspondent, Japhet said: “I got married to my wife sometime in September 2021. We had during the period agreed not to mate until we were married, and I didn’t have any issue with that.
“When we eventually got married, we started mating but pregnancy was yet to come when I got recruited into the police.
“Before I left for the training, we had an extensive discussion about the future.
“As the only son of my mother, she was actually in a hurry for me to marry and bear children for her, but my wife and I chose to hold on for a while since I was proceeding to the camp.
“It is quite unfortunate that we had regular discussion on the phone and on a few occasions, she had the opportunity to visit me in camp.
“To my surprise, I came back to meet a pregnancy I didn’t know anything about. Probing further, she mentioned my own brother whom I trusted so much and moved my wife to stay in same compound with him.
“Little did I know that the devil would use my brother to destroy my marriage by impregnating her. When I inquired from Samuel before his death, he told me my wife was the one that lured him into it.
“Samuel told me that my wife had in the course of their discussion confided in him that I was not good in bed; that though she loved me, the few months I spent with her before proceeding to camp, I was lazy in bed and was not satisfying her. So she needed a strong man to satisfy her in bed.
“He said the complaint came several times and he was afraid my wife could go outside looking for satisfaction, hence he decided to lend a helping hand.
“So, I didn’t want to take it up with Samuel when I came back because I blame my wife who allowed the whole thing to happen.
“Even when my mother was pushing me to make an issue of it, I resisted and kept quiet because we lost our father few years back. So I was careful about it.
“I was also confused about the decision to take when I returned to meet her in that condition with her unsatisfactory explanation.
“I resisted pressure from my mother and quickly moved to my place of primary assignment to allow my wife to take a decision that suited her.
“But deep within me, I concluded not to have anything to do with her. She hardly calls and I hardly call her too.
“I decided to reveal this because of the condition I am in now at the hospital. I may not survive this and I want the world to know.
“Unfortunately, Samuel is no more. He died recently from herdsmen attack when he went to the farm in the village. I pray God to grant him eternal rest and forgive all his sins on earth.
“I was not able to attend his burial because I was also here on my sick bed.”
He said since late Samuel was not married, the new baby might become his own depending on what the mother of the baby wants but she is certainly no longer his wife.
Angela was in tears when our correspondent contacted her, lamenting that she had deeply offended her husband (Japhet) and prayed that he would find a place in his heart to forgive her.
She admitted that all his husband had said was true but added that it was the devil that actually tempted her into allowing her husband’s brother to sleep with her.
But she explained that Samuel made maximum use of the opportunity. “So much so that I could not let him go, and the result is what I am facing now. I am passing through the most turbulent time of my life.
“I never intended to cheat on him when we finally agreed to marry, having abstained from sex throughout the period we were dating.
“I never contemplated it, but the temptation of sex pushed me into it. I consider it the devil’s work.”
Angela said her parents had warned her not to do abortion no matter the situation saying that she would die if she tried it.
She said: “When I eventually got married to my husband and we started having sex, I discovered that he could not satisfy me in bed. He was cumming too quickly and seemed not to be interested in sex, at least with me.
“We didn’t have sex before we got married. It was actually what we agreed on. But after we came together, he was still avoiding getting intimate.
“I always had to make the first move or dress to tempt him. The few times we had fun, it would be over too quickly and I ended up not satisfied
“The naked truth is that I wanted a man who could satisfy me. Unfortunately, Japhet was not the type. And when I gave his brother Samuel an opportunity, he proved himself and blindly, we moved on in error. I am a human being. I have blood flowing in my veins.
“My husband did not offend me but I deeply offended him by my actions. My marriage was reasonably good and I like my husband, but there has never been any great passion between us.
“Meeting Samuel in the absence of my husband who was in police training camp was an opportunity to have a romantic connection with great sex.
“Me I like sex but my husband didn’t like it often. And from day one, I knew that if my husband got to know, he would be devastated.
“I actually didn’t know how it would end, in tears probably, and this is the result. But Samuel was really not afraid when the bubbling was going on.
“I was really confused and worried about what was going on within us, yet Samuel carried on as if there was nothing between us when we were with neighbours in the compound. Yet he showed a lot of passion in the bedroom and we became attached to each other.”
Asked how it all began between her and Samuel, Angela said: “It started like a joke during a gist with Samuel and some of my friends and course mates. A discussion came up about sexual performance and our conversation attracted me to Samuel.
“One thing led to another and I found myself having amazing sex with him. He was actually in his late 30s and sexy. He was actually very athletic, far more than my husband.
“I love my husband, but not getting satisfactory sex pushed me up the wall.
“I know that what was going on between me and Samuel was wrong. I feel bad because Samuel is a better lover than my husband. As a result, I wanted sex with him always.
“What kept me going with Samuel was his power to act. My husband is a gentleman and very decent, but his brother was so sex mad to my satisfaction.
“I have decided to reveal everything to you because he also revealed everything to you. I know I have wronged him and he does not need me again as his wife, more so that his manhood is damaged.
“I’m afraid of visiting him at the hospital because he might kill me. But I pray for his quickly recovery. I also pray for the repose of the soul of Samuel, the biological father of my son.
“I will struggle to train him if God keeps him alive. It is not his fault. I made a mistake but I followed the words of my mother not to abort any pregnancy no matter the situation.
“It was actually a mistake that I allowed Samuel. But what if it is the only child I had in my womb?
“I will explain the genesis of everything to him, and I will want him to become a lawyer or a medical doctor.”
